Can You Live in Abu Dhabi Without a Car?

Yes, on some routes. Check the exact bus stop, shift time, weekend schedule and last mile before choosing a home.

Yes, some Abu Dhabi commutes work without a car, but the exact stop and shift matter. Start by checking the nearest bus stop to both building entrances and compare the published timetable with your work start and finish. A route through your district does not prove it will serve the address or hours you need.

Check the door-to-door trip

Use the exact stops. Abu Dhabi Mobility's standard bus timetable page links route schedules and the Darbi app for current arrivals. Check the stop number beside your home and workplace, then test the walk from each stop to the actual entrance. The posted route timetable PDFs are dated March 2026. Confirm your departure in Darbi before travelling.

Keep separate plans for weekday and weekend shifts. The official PDFs separate weekday service from the Saturday and Sunday timetable. A public holiday can also have a special timetable; check the current Abu Dhabi Mobility media centre and live Darbi information before leaving.

Worked route examples for different shifts

These examples use the March 2026 route timetables. Add the walk from your building to the home stop and from the destination stop to work.

Home stop to work stopPublished timetableWhat it means for a shift
Gate Towers, Al Reem stop 1082 to Galleria, Al Maryah stop 758, route 67On a weekday morning, departures at 05:14, 05:31 and 05:44 reach the Galleria at 05:23, 05:40 and 05:53. The first two gaps are 17 and 13 minutes. An early shift near the Galleria stop may be possible if the walk to both stops fits. Check a later bus too, since the spacing varies.
Gate Towers stop 1082 to Galleria stop 758, route 67The separate Saturday and Sunday timetable lists 05:14, 05:29 and 05:44 departures, reaching the Galleria at 05:23, 05:38 and 05:53.Weekend service has its own times. Do not copy a weekday plan onto Saturday or Sunday.
Dalma Mall Main Entrance, Abu Dhabi Industrial City stop 11894 to Abu Dhabi Bus Station stop 421, route 101A weekday bus leaves at 05:06 and reaches the bus station at 06:17, a scheduled 71 minutes.A central-city shift starting before arrival would need another plan. Allow additional time for the walk from the station to the actual workplace.

For a late finish on Al Maryah, the weekday route 67 table shows a Galleria departure at 23:31 toward Gate Towers at 23:39. The next listed departure is 00:25, a 54-minute gap. If your shift can end in that gap, check the live arrival or budget a taxi. Read the exact route direction and weekend section in Abu Dhabi Mobility's route 67 timetable and the route 101 timetable.

In summer, include the uncovered walk and wait in your decision. Check shade, covered walkways and an indoor connection near both ends. A short map distance may still mean standing or walking outdoors at your commute time.

Price regular bus travel

Abu Dhabi Mobility lists the Standard Service fare as AED 2 when boarding plus AED 0.05 per kilometre, capped at AED 5 per journey. If you change buses and tap in within 60 minutes of the prior tap-out, the second AED 2 boarding fee is waived when the route is not in the opposite direction; the rules allow at most two transfers, or three buses, in one journey. Check your actual route distance and card terms before budgeting.

The published 7-day pass is AED 35 and the 30-day pass is AED 95. These Standard Service passes cover city and suburban travel and exclude intercity services. Compare a pass with your own workdays and journey distance. See the official Abu Dhabi bus fare details, pass prices and conditions and the bus timetable page.

Set a taxi fallback budget

Plan for occasional taxis. Allow four return days per month, or eight one-way rides, for occasional trips. Assume each daytime street-hail ride is 10 km. Abu Dhabi Mobility lists a Silver Taxi daytime flagfall of AED 5 and AED 1.82 per kilometre. Tawasul and National Taxi list the same daytime rates. At those inputs, one ride is AED 23.20 and the monthly scenario is 8 x (AED 5 + 10 x AED 1.82) = AED 185.60.

This excludes waiting time, any phone or app booking fee, detours, tolls and traffic-related extra charges. The Silver Taxi minimum fare is AED 12, which does not change this 10 km example. Check the meter or live app estimate for your real trip. Compare the current authority tariff, Tawasul tariff and National Taxi tariff.

Use the Abu Dhabi cost-of-living guide to budget regular transport alongside housing. The monthly or annual rent guide explains how to compare payment plans and registration before you choose a neighbourhood, and renting directly in Abu Dhabi shows landlords that let homes without a broker.
